Connect Google Scholar to your library

As our library instruction season swings into gear, inevitably the topic of Google Scholar turns up. Students, and often faculty, ask, “Should I use it?” and I always tell them it’s another tool to add to their research tool belt. If it does the job that you need it to do, great! If not, the subscription databases we offer through the library are there for you, too.

There are good points and bad points about using it, but one of the best things about Google Scholar is that it unlocks our collection for a whole range of students who may not be aware that we have a host of other tools available for them. It does this rather seamlessly while students are on campus. If they do a search in Google Scholar, and then try to access a journal article, they won’t encounter a pay wall (that screen that stops and asks them to pull out a credit card and turn over $25-$50 before they can actually view the article.) Our campus I.P. range is recognized and therefore our electronic journal content is simply available.

But what happens when those students go home to their off-campus apartments? Are they out of luck? No, not if they make one quick change to the Google Scholar settings. By clicking on the ‘gear’ icon, and then selecting ‘Library Links’ from the left-hand column, they can connect Google Scholar to CSU Libraries. Once that setting is in place, students will see a ‘FindIt@CSU’ link for articles that are available through our collection. No credit card required, only a quick login with their CSU eID and they are on their way to “free” full-text.

Do you have a tablet?

If you have a tablet, our library has a new way for you to keep up with your professional literature. It’s called Browzine, and it lets you browse the table of contents of some of your favorite journals from your tablet (iPad, Android, Kindle Fire HD). 

You will need to download the Browzine App and then set it up to work with our CSU Subscriptions. For more information, check out this guide:

The OED did what?!

If you hadn’t heard the news, the Oxford English Dictionary has added a new definition for the word literally. My favorite headline to announce this came from The Nottingham Tab, “OED Literally Redefine ‘literally’ to mean ‘literally’ and ‘not literally’ both at the same time.” 

It made me chuckle, and also made me check…yes, indeed, our online OED has the new definition. 

I hope for the pedants amongst us that your heads won’t literally explode. (Sorry…I had to.)


Something for your syllabus

As the final days of summer slip away, and you start putting some spit and polish on your syllabi, consider this: your students will get more out of the library, if you put more of the library into your classes…and that starts with the syllabus. 

Here are some quick ideas for some library things you could add: 

  1. The name and contact details of the librarian who work with your subject area.
  2. A link to the Research Guide that matches the subject area of your class. [Hint – If you don’t see a Research Guide that you think will work, you can get in touch with your librarian to have one created just for your class.]
  3. A link to the “Where Do I Start?” library research tutorial.

Those are just three ideas of library-related things that can be integrated into your syllabus, RamCT course, or course web site…but I can think of many more…like, links to the best research databases in your field, links to the library catalog record of a reference book or e-book, and if you are working with new graduate students, why not link to one of the many dissertations or theses that are part of the Digital Repository so they have a good idea of what they are aiming for. 

Let your imagination soar, and let your course materials help guide students to the academic quality resources that you’d like them to use.

The public library has access to some amazing online content, including many popular e-books, audiobooks, and even movies. Check out their Downloadable Library page for more information. If your pursuits are more pragmatic, they have a wealth of online databases on their e-Resources page that can help you with everything from doing genealogical research to creating a business plan. One of the databases that a lot of the CSU community uses is their access to electronic back issues of the Fort Collins’ Coloradoan. Check it out!

Ordering books right from the catalog

Did you know that you can order a book to add to the Libraries’ collection right from our catalog? We load records into our catalog from selected academic publishers for books that we don’t yet own. That means you can help us select books for our collection with just a few keystrokes. Here’s how it works: 

1) Search the catalog for a specific title or topic. In the results, you may run across a record for a book that looks like this:

2) Click on the link that says “This book is available for the library to purchase in print.”

3) Fill in your CSU eID and password, complete a quick form, and voilà! 

If you didn’t find the book you would like in our collection, you can suggest that we purchase it by using this form. Please get in touch if you have any questions.
